With a headshell installed in the good collar, I soldered the new wires to each pin, then soldered the combined wires to the "draw wire" (which I had pulled through the arm when the original wires were removed). The only practical way to fix it was to use a donor arm's screw collar (which I did, from another standard tonearm that I had with a broken arm yoke). The red wire pin's spring broke through the piece in the tonearm's screw collar, therefore that pin lost contact. It has a standard S shaped tonearm with the removable headshell. Here's what happened and what I did to fix it. This Pioneer was comparable to the top of the line Technics turntables (such as those above the SL-1200 series, such as the SL1300, 1500, 1600, etc).
As a note, the Pioneer PL-600 direct drive turntable (original silver version) was one of their higher quality built units (heavy platter, PLL quartz lock, metal construction, suspension with transport lock bolts, adjustable VTA tonearm, fully automatic start/stop). Hi All - I fell asleep early, woke up at 2am, and decided to try my luck at a "no loss" turntable that would otherwise be scrapped (a nice Pioneer PL-600 direct drive with a dead right channel, but which I used the dustcover for one of my Linn turntables, since it was the perfect size - not bad, considering I only paid $10 for the whole turntable).
